Common Areas
Courtyards: Duval College has four courtyards. All of the courtyards are very social places. People often bring down their books and study in the shade together, while others kick around a ball. Many College functions hold activities in the courtyards as well.
Brick Courtyard is, as its name implies, laid with bricks (thus never muddy when you’re out in your high heels). The Junior Common Room doors open up to Brick Courtyard, so most College functions are started, and finished here. Drinks and nibbles are served in Brick Courtyard before all formal dinners and we have BBQ’s and bands at Ball Recovery and Aussie Night. During the day, many students eat lunch on the tables in Brick. It is surrounded by gardens and blossoming trees and has beautiful wisteria on the beams of the shade structure. Brick is a very popular spot to hang out.
The Duval student rooms building is shaped like a figure of 8 and has two courtyards. Both have green grass, benches, gardens and trees as well as ivy and climbing roses. They are known as First Courtyard and Second Courtyard and there is a small amount of rivalry between the two.

Junior Common Room: The Junior Common Room is used for a range of activities. Usually it has carpet and comfy chairs for those lazy Sunday afternoons. For functions, all of the chairs and the carpet are removed and it becomes a big dance floor. The JCR joins onto the dining hall and is a place to mingle before formal dinners. There is also a fireplace in the JCR for the chilly winter nights in Armidale.
Senior Common Room: This room is for senior students only. With limited kitchen facilities, comfy couches, bean bags and pay TV, it’s a quiet place for our senior students to relax.
Music: Duval has a piano, drum kits and other musical equipment. Anyone who plays an instrument is encouraged to bring it along to college. Each year the Small Music Ensemble event in the Sir Frank Kitto competition allows students to show off their musical talent whilst representing their college.
BBQ areas: Duval has a few shaded BBQ areas. They have benches and the College replenishes the gas supply. People often use them for pancake birthday breakfasts and many functions include BBQ meals. Kenoeth, one of Duval’s smaller shaded courtyards is a great place for an afternoon Barbie, and is surrounded by the Rhys Robertson memorial garden so it is a very special place for Duvalians.

Tanderra: Tanderra is Duval’s entertainment centre. It has comfy chairs, a big screen LCD TV and DVD, as well as a pool table and foozball tables. Bottom Tanderra is a large room attached to the entertainment room. It is a useful place for College meetings, yoga, band practice, and aerobics. It is also used by study groups and bible study groups.

Dark Room: The dark room can be used by those who do photography as a hobby, or by those who may need it for their studies.

Dining Facilities
Dining Hall: The dining hall is the most social place at College. It is a big beautiful room with dark floor boards and a small stage, mood lighting and honour boards and trophy cabinets on the walls. It is where every meal is taken, formal dinners, trivia nights, awards nights, talent nights and charity events are held, and it holds a large Christmas tree every year at Christmas in July.
The Servery: This area is shared by Duval and Drummond and Smith Colleges. Students cycle through to get hot and cold meals at meal times, or to get snacks in between from the Cafe.
