Duvalians performing

UNE has always celebrated individualism and multiculturalism. UNE students come from all over Australia, and from all over the world. Each student brings their own cultural background to UNE, and to college life, and enriches the learning atmosphere with their own traditions and customs. We like to celebrate these cultural influences in many ways. Many Colleges have cultural dinners to recognise the great mix of students at UNE. Duval College holds various themed dinners throughout the term, including Japanese, Italian and Mexican nights. We are also a great competitor in the annual intercollegiate cultural competition; the SFK competition.

One of the Colleges main ways to involve students and supporters in a cultural sense, is the Sir Frank Kitto competition. The SFK competition allows students to continue to do the things that they love, from debating, to acting, to dancing and singing, and it allows them to do this representing their college with pride. Each college has SFK reps who help to orgainse the events by setting dates, finding and setting up venues, finding trainers, teachers and judges with expertise in a specific area. This means that students will not only continue to practice their writing skills, debating stance or performance ability, but with the help of mentors, they can significantly improve in their area of passion. Each year the quest for the SFK trophy concludes with a great finale, Performance. Each College has a large contingent of students involved in the preparation and execution of Performance. There are rehearsal directors, choreographers, dancers, singers and actors. There are also set designers, costume and make-up designers, and event organisers. Performance is a rewarding, memorable and fun experience that involves many college members and draws a huge crowd every year.

Each year Duval College also has Night of Stars. This is a talent night which allows students to perform in front of their fellow college members. People who play instruments, sing, dance, or have no talent at all can get involved. It is always very entertaining and hilarious at times.
