About DSS

DSS - Decision Support Systems - are tools in the form of computer packages which use real world data and conditions in order to predict outcomes and impacts on livestock, crops, and the environment.

These Decision Support Systems are being used by lecturers in universities to enhance teaching, and broaden the students' learning experience to embrace real world dynamics. Currently, students in several UNE courses are using GrassGro, a DSS developed by the CSIRO in conjunction with UNE and Horizon Agriculture.

The aim of this approach to learning is to:

  • Facilitate learning about important but complex interactions within ecosystems

  • Offer students an opportunity to develop work-ready, relevant skills using computer aided decision support tools

  • Facilitate students adopting a deeper, problem-solving approach to learning and

  • Ensure that the decision support experiences are linked clearly to the broader curriculum.

There are other tools in planning and development, catering for crop growers and livestock farmers. UNE, in conjunction with CSIRO and with the support of Horizon Technology, is making a number of these Decision Support Systems also available to enhance learning.

These Decision Support Tools can be made accessible to other organisations and universities. More details can be obtained by contacting Dr. Jim Scott.
