Thunderbolts Annual Bushrangers Function
One of Drummond and Smith Colleges most important functions is the annual Thunderbolts Function. Held at the end of O'week when the returners have arrived back at College, this function enables new students to learn college traditions and spirit and to meet our senior students. The theme is Bushrangers and the Courtyard lights up with a bonfire. We also have a jumping castle and a mechanical bull to add to the fun! The function is held throughout the day and into the evening and incorperates many activities, from whip cracking to a re-enactment of the Thunderbolt legend.
Fred Ward was born in the earlier 1800s. A skilled horseman whose horse stealing saw him spend many years in prison, from which he escaped to live the life of a notorious bushranger. He robbed properties, travellers and hotels in the New England region and is known for the mail coach 'stick up' at Split Rock near Uralla, (which is 20 minutes from UNE). At one stage a ransom of a huge 400 pounds was put out for his capture. He was eventually shot by a policeman after a long chase on horseback. Known as 'Captain Thunderbolt' he was apparently liked by those who knew him.
"This function is action packed, with a bonfire, mechanical bull and the traditional ‘Thunderbolts’ trophy. The trophy comprises of events such as: Keg throwing, Tug ‘o’ war, Cow pat throwing, gumboot throwing, an Ironman/woman challenge and the floor songs. These events are competed by each floor to see who is crowned ‘Thunderbolts’ floor of the year.
If you think you have what it takes to be a bushranger then now is the time to show it. Don’t shave (guys or girls) for the four weeks leading up to the function to be a true Bushman gang member." - Shane, Vice President DSRAC 2008
