O'week 2008
Orientation Week is one of UNE's biggest weeks of the year. Classes don't start until the following week to allow new students enough time to sufficiently orientate themselves. During O'Week, all over the University new students are learning their way around, finding the library, touring Faculties, getting 'show bags' and free stuff and meeting UNE staff and current students. There is constant activity and excitement, from BBQ's to Beach Parties.
Drummond and Smith College always celebrates O'week in a big way! Every day is filled with group activities, games, treasure hunts, dinners, organised outings and much more. Freshers (new students) are given college shirts, taught the college song and college traditions and learn about college spirit. Everyone gets in and has a go at everything! It's a wonderful experience and a fabulous way to make new friendships. Even the very shy freshers have a good time!
O'Week is a good time to ask questions. The College Office is open daily (8:30am to 4pm with lunch from 1pm to 2pm) for parents and students to ask about fees, room phones, meal cards etc. The Student Centre can help with any degree and enrolment related questions. Academic Mentors and Resident Fellows (go to Support) are also able to help with any queries or worries and will help students with any homesickness or study questions.
Welcome to the time of your life!
The 2008 President told our new students this:
During the first term at college we will be celebrating the arrival of new students. For these functions it is tradition that residents “dress up” so it may be an idea for you to bring along some extra items. We often give prizes for best dressed so you’d better come prepared. You’ll need:
- For formal dinners you’ll need formal wear- shirts and ties or pretty frocks.
- During O’Week we have a Hens and Bucks night. For the girls the theme is Angels and Demons, so crack out your halos and horns; and for the boys the theme is Aussie Blokes, so have some footy shorts and singlets ready to go.
- We also have a gender-bender party planned, so raid Vinnies with plans of acquiring boys clothes if you are a girl and girls clothes if you are a boy.
- For the swimmers amongst you - our two swimming sporting events are in the first week of term so bring along your cozzies.
- Bring any other sporting gear you might have - bats, balls, sticks, pads, boots, etc you’ll have plenty of opportunities to use it in the intercollegiate sporting competitions. We came third in PT (Men’s) and second in MB (women’s) trophies last year and we need your help to make those extra points!
- Some rough country clothes - Thunderbolts, one of the biggest functions of the year, is in first term and it has a country theme.
- Any other dress up clothes you might have - the year is full of great events and you never know when that pink tutu might come in handy.
- You will need a school uniform for Back to School Night. Or perhaps come as your nutty Science teacher, quiet Librarian or super fit PE teacher.
- There will be a geriatrics party on Friday of O’Week, so again, search Vinnies for some old folk’s clothes, get some flour for your hair, and knock the lenses out of an old pair of glasses.
- Also bring any instruments you play, as well as any artworks, short stories, or poems, as we can really use these things competing in the SFK (cultural) Trophy. Our representatives are looking forward to a great year.
