Future Students - Moving In
Every year we get very excited when the new students start arriving. We get everything ready, from name badges to shirts. Your Resident Fellow already knows your name and everyone is ready to show the ‘freshers’ around and to make them feel welcome.
Arriving at College can make even the bravest first year student nervous. Just remember that there are a hundred of you, all in the same boat! Everything is organised for you and the activities in Orientation Week are designed to help you settle in and get to know everyone quickly and easily. You’ll be put in groups to play games, go on treasure hunts and more. So, there’s no need to feel nervous, just feel excited to meet your new family at your new home!
Don’t ever be afraid to ask questions! If you want to know anything about college before you arrive just ring the Office. Once you are here you can talk to the cleaners (Rob, Jenny, Sanjay and Mick are lovely!), your RF, to the Senior RF, to the College Principal and to the Administrative Assistant.

Take along all the things that make college feel like home. You can have a clock radio, a little fridge, TV, stereo, computer, dvd player, lava lamp (you’ll need a Powerboard) etc in your room, just make sure you get them all safety tagged before you arrive! This can be done at a local electrical goods store, or with an electrician. If you have your own computer, make sure that you bring a category 5 ethernet cable to allow internet connection. The College does have a wireless network, but some rooms may not get a perfect reception. Don’t forget that if you have forgotten something you can either buy it at a cheap shop in Armidale, or you can collect it when you go home in the holidays or for a weekend during Term. Also, Armidale has been known to get chilly unexpectedly, so do pack some winter woolies!! Ugg boots and flannelette pjs are a must!! |
What the President told the new students last year
During the first term at college we will be celebrating the arrival of new students. For these functions it is tradition that residents “dress up” so it may be an idea for you to bring along some extra items. We often give prizes for best dressed so you’d better come prepared. You’ll need:
- For formal dinners you’ll need formal wear- shirts and ties or pretty frocks.
- During O’Week we have a few themed nights. So bring any old, bright and funny clothes you have to dress to impress!
- We may also have a gender-bender party, so raid Vinnies with plans of acquiring boys clothes if you are a girl and girls clothes if you are a boy.
- For the swimmers amongst you - our two swimming sporting events are in the first week of term so bring along your cozzies.
- Bring any other sporting gear you might have - bats, balls, sticks, pads, boots, etc you’ll have plenty of opportunities to use it in the intercollegiate sporting competitions. Have a look at the different sports we play at D&S.
- Some rough country clothes - Thunderbolts, one of the biggest functions of the year, is in first term and it has a country theme.
- Any other dress up clothes you might have - the year is full of great events and you never know when that pink tutu might come in handy.
- You will need a school uniform for Back to School Night. Or perhaps come as your nutty Science teacher, quiet Librarian or super fit PE teacher.
- Also bring any instruments you play, as well as any artworks, short stories, or poems, as we can really use these things competing in the SFK (cultural) Trophy. Our representatives are looking forward to a great year.
