Richard Torbay with students

Member for Northern Tabelands, Richard Torbay, has long linked his humble beginnings to the University of New England. In 2007 he was invited as a Guest speaker to Drummond and Smith's annual D H Drummond Memorial Dinner. Each year the college honours its founder with a traditional formal dinner to which his family, the Senior Fellows linked with the College, and guests are invited. Richard Torbay gave an inspirational and humurous speech and offered much advice and support to our students. Pictured are Richard Torbay and students Jackie, Jacquie and Ashley in traditional formal Academic gowns.

Each year UNE and the Australian Government, as well as many individuals and organisations, provide Scholarship and Bursary opportunities to UNE students. For most students it is worth applying for as many Scholarships as possible. Not only does it provide experience in working with applications (a useful career skill), it also helps many financially affected students to get through their degree. Many Drummond and Smith students hold Scholarships, from those with Government Scholarships allowing them to spend time studying overseas, to those that rely on Rural Government Scholarships to get them through their degree. In this picture Bec Moxon, a Resident Fellow and upstanding D&S student, was awarded the Frederick G White Bursary for Rural Women.

Professor Alan Pettigrew at HCC

Each year both Duval College and Drummond and Smith College enter into the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic. This is a 111km paddle to help raise funds for the Arrow Bone Marrow Transplant Foundation. It is a tradition of which we are most proud. In this photograph Professor Alan Pettigrew, Vice-Chancellor and CEO of the University of New England, addresses our HCC participants and wishes them luck for the incredibly memorable journey and experience that lies ahead.

Cleaning Up Australia

Drummond and Smith College residents love getting involved in communtiy activities. Shave for a Cure always attracts a huge crowd and blue, pink, shaved and mohawked hair-dos can be seen for weeks afterward. Clean Up Australia is annually a great day out. We put on a BBQ and help to keep the New England region clean and beautiful, whilst having fun!! This year we featured in the local paper for our fantastic efforts! Our students also like to get involved with all aspects of UNE life. Below, some of our students feature on the front page of a local newspaper in an article about a series of short plays that UNE will be putting on. Nikki and Amy (the two girls at the front) have both been SFK (intercollegiate cultural competition) representatives at Drummond and Smith College.
