Facilities at D&S College
The Courtyard: This is the best thing about Drummond and Smith College. It’s huge, it’s green and it is the place to be. Throuhout the year many functions, activities and games are held in the courtyard. The ‘Thunderbolt’s’ function is held annually. Students dress up as Bushrangers and there is a mechanical bull, a jumping Castle and a bonfire!!
Students study in the courtyard, play volleyball, badminton, soccer, backyard cricket, and hold the D&S State of Origin and Olympics. It is the biggest College Courtyard at UNE and we enjoy every centimetre of it.
Music Room: Just because you move to college doesn’t mean that you have to give up your favorite instrument. You’ll also need to practice for all of the SFK events like small music ensemble and Performance. This room has padded walls, a drum kit, a piano and a keyboard. There is also a grand piano in the dining hall.
Bathrooms: Every floor has shared bathrooms with really big showers and plenty of hot water.
Shared kitchenettes: With a fridge, a sink, a microwave and a kettle. Need some late night noodles to get you through that assignment?
Common Rooms: There’s one on every floor so you never have to miss the Simpsons. This room can be closed off too so that you don’t disturb people sleeping and studying.
Bike Shed: The College has a secure bike shed available to Drummond and Smith residents only.
The Law Library: Drummond & Smith’s most recent addition, of which we are most proud, is our new on site R. F. Smart Law Library. We are very privileged to have received the donation of the entire collection of Judge Rex Smart. This is a comprehensive collection of important legal journals and texts dating back to the first fleet, and is available to D&S residents only. Drummond and Smith College students have also developed a Law Society which helps to support our Law students and use of the Law Library.
24hr Computer Room: For those who don’t have their own computer or printer. This is a great place for a group study session. The Scanner, colour priner and photocopier are available here 24 hours!
Dining Hall. Our new dining facilities have allowed students to have more choice when it comes to meal times. Our students only pay for what they eat. The dining hall is opened throughout the day so they can purchase coffees, ice creams, salads and focaccias whenever they’re feeling hungry. D&S students also get a discount at the UNE café.
We also hold lots of functions in the dining hall. From talent and trivia nights to fundraisers and awards nights to our formal dinners where everyone comes in suits and dresses, the dining hall is the social hub of the college.
Laundries: Washing machines are FREE! There are also drying rooms, dryers, ironing boards and irons.
BBQ areas: These undercover areas are perfect for a birthday bbq or a floor party.
Dark room: For those interested in photography, there is a specially designed dark room allowing the development of photos.
Car parking: There are hundreds of car parks around the colleges. You will need to purchase a parking sticker to park in the College bays. This same sticker allows you to park in bays across the university. In 2008 these were $50 for the year. You will find more information on parking at UNE here.
Guy Ballard Room: Our main entertainment room can host a variety of functions with its wide screen TV, lounges, pool table, dart board, and table tennis.
Gym: In 2008 we opened our Gym, full of brand new equipment and ready for a quick workout between classes. Really helps with getting that perfect life balance!
Conference Facilities. Drummond and Smith College, combined with Duval College, offer Conference facilities and dining facilities for large and small, national and local groups. We have meeting rooms and can supply various catering arrangements, from morning teas to corporate lunches. We also supply equipment such as data projectors.
Mail: Mail is placed in alphabetised pigeon holes on a daily basis. There are also post bags and a post box at the college so that you can write home about the fantastic time that you are having at D&S.
Vending machines: For whenever you need a late night chocolate hit.
The Office: For any questions about fees, your room, maintenance, your phone, the internet, your meal card, ANYTHING, come and see Ann in the Office!
