Sport

D&S Girls Rugby Team

CONGRATULATIONS to all D&S Boys who participated in the PT Sporting competition!! D&S came first in PT 2008 and third in the MB 2008 womens competition! That is an awesome effort from the smallest College, once again proving that quality over quantity is best! D&S were also 2008 Minor Premiers for both Soccer and Rugby League, with some Grand Finals coming up!! Great job guys!

Sport is very important and popular at UNE, especially amongst the Colleges. Each weekend is allocated a different sport and all of the Colleges play off against each other, earning points towards two trophies. It is great fun for people of all sporting levels and is also a great day out for the supporters. Colleges try to sing their songs louder than the others and a lot of people take picnics along to watch and cheer for their mates. It is also a great chance for people to try sports that they never imagined they'd play!

Drummond and Smith College is one of only two UNE colleges ever to win all 3 intercollegiate trophies for culture, men’s sport and women’s sport. 2 years later, we won two of them and came second in the other. Not bad for the smallest college! We just ask everyone to get in and have a go, even if you are hopeless at sport. That’s why we do so well, no one is ‘expected’ to get involved, everyone really wants to be a part of it and to support their team and D&S.
The two intercollegiate sporting competitions are:
PT = President’s Trophy (the men’s sporting competition)
MB = Mary Bagnell Trophy (the women’s sporting competition)

Some of the Sports we get involved with include:
The Swimming Carnival
Athletics               Rugby 10s
Touch                   Waterpolo
Hockey                 Soccer
Netball                 Tennis
Basketball            Canoe Polo
Wall Climbing       Lawn Bowls
AFL/NERF             Volleyball
Badminton           The Run Swim
Cross Country     Charity Runs

Drummond and Smith has an affiliation with the local Rugby Union Club, the Barbarians (known as the 'Baa Baas'). This allows D&S students to have quality training, coaching and games. It also provides a great day out for D&S spectators!

Culture

UNE has a great mix of multiculture backgrounds and students from all over the world. The intercollegiate Cultural Competition (striving to win the SFK – Sir Frank Kitto trophy) allows students to showcase their many and varied talents. The SFK Competition between the colleges is very strong. Some events allow students to display artworks or their writing, others involve on-stage artistry. Colleges catch buses to each event and support their teams. One of the annual SFK events is Performance. This is always really fun. It involves singing, dancing and acting, as well as make-up, costume and set design. The SFK competition includes:

Public speaking          Theatre Sports

Small Music Ensemble

Art and Craft             Poetry and Short Story

Debating                    Performance

Each Year we also have our annual talent night. – So you think you have talent? Then prove yourself against fellow contestants and be judged by our trusty cleaners. This isn’t just about singing, if you know how to play an instrument, dance, or even write a poem, give it a go. Floors will compete in front of our famous panel to be crowned the most talented floor and receive points towards the overall ‘Best floor’ trophy announced at the end of the year.

Leadership Opportunities

Every UNE college has PT, MB and SFK Representatives who organise all of the annual events. These Reps are nominated and voted for by the College members through an official process. The positions require organisational and interpersonal skills and the postion holders are usually upstanding, involved and respected College members. The Reps are responsible for getting all College members involved and enthused with College activities. They are important and respected positions that give students an opportunity to develop useful career skills.

Community Support

Clean Up Australia Day

Another annual event that is looked forward to is the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic, a 111km paddle to help raise funds for The Arrow Bone Marrow Transplant Foundation. It’s a very rewarding experience that we love to get involved in each year.

Each year we also participate in Shave for a Cure, charity runs, blood bank drives and Clean Up Australia Day. We’re always mindful of helping out the community where we can, and we always really enjoy giving a helping hand.

FUNctions

D&S College Ball

One of the greatest things about College are all of the fun activities that are organised each year. They provide a great way to meet new people and to make wonderful friendships. Many functions are annual traditions and everybody thoroughly looks forward to getting involved. The functions vary greatly, from formal to fun to fundraising. Students get to dress up in fancy dress or formal wear, play games or receive awards. They are a great and important part of College life. During exam periods no functions are held to ensure that everyone can focus wholly on their studies.
