Pre-Arrival Information

Griffith University has 5 campuses. The conference is at the Nathan Campus.

Accommodation registration

Campus Life Office, The Hub, South Ring Road, Nathan Campus, Bld 11, Griffith University (http://www.griffith.edu.au/locations/maps/na_map_park.pdf)
Griffith Accommodation is open Monday to Friday 9.00am - 4.30pm.
Special Conference Opening Hours outside normal hours include: Thursday 1 July 4.30pm - 10.00pm

If you are arriving at Griffith University's Nathan Campus outside the office hours listed above, please follow these directions:

  1. Go to Level 1, Hub Building located on the Nathan Campus. (Site Map reference E3, Building N11)
  2. On the wall outside the office is a white Griffith University telephone. Pick up the handset, dial *9332 and our Residential Advisor (RA) will answer.
  3. Let our RA know that you are wishing to check into your accommodation and you are waiting on level 1 of the Hub Building.
  4. The RA will then meet you and escort you to your room.

Alternatively you can contact the Residential Advisor direct from a pay telephone or your mobile telephone (cellphone) on 0407 729 002.

The Multi-Faith Centre Nathan Campus, Bld 35. 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm (1300 - 1700) Thursday 1 July.

Transport from Airport

Brisbane chaplains are offering some transport from the airport to Griffith University, Nathan Campus. If you are arriving on Wednesday 30 June or Thursday 1 July, visit http://www.une.edu.au/dreaming04/airport.html and send your flight details before Wednesday, June 23. If you receive confirmation that your flight can be met, please look for Conference signs at the airport. A donation of $5 would help defray the costs to local chaplains.

If you need to make your own way to the Nathan campus, there are a number of alternatives.

Taxi

A taxi from the airport to Nathan Campus costs approximately $50 AUD. You may be able to share a taxi with another participant.

Public Transport

Airtrain's new Airport Stations, are located just outside Brisbane Airport's Domestic and International Terminals. The Airtrain takes 22 minutes to reach Brisbane Central from the domestic terminal. Cost is $10 AUD per journey. Trains run on average four times an hour. See www.airtrain.com.au for further information, and http://www.airtrain.com.au/BrisbaneMap.asp for a map of central Brisbane.
From the city, take bus no. 120 or 135 departing from the Platypus station in the Myer Centre in the Queen Street Mall right into the Nathan campus of Griffith University.

Automobile approaches to Nathan Campus

From the airport:

Exit Airport via Airport Drive. Turn left into Gateway Motorway at the Gold Coast sign [Highway 1] and proceed over the Gateway Bridge (Toll $2.20. Coins required for automatic lanes). Take Mt Gravatt Capalaba exit. Turn right into Mt Gravatt Capalaba Rd [Highway 2]. After crossing Logan Rd (near the Garden City Shopping Centre), this road becomes Kessels Rd [Highway 2]. After passing QEII stadium, turn right into Griffith Rd (the entry into Griffith University). (http://www.griffith.edu.au/locations/maps/na_map_park.pdf).

From the city:

from the Freeway take Exit 36 (Klump Rd, Mains Rd, Griffith University) to Highway 2. From right hand lane, turn right under freeway, turn left at second roundabout, the Hub - Bld 11 - is past the third roundabout, and on your left on the South Ring Road.

Workshops and Papers

The workshop & papers are listed on our website http://www.une.edu.au/dreaming04/papers.html. Please check at regular intervals for up-dates. Sign-up for workshops is available at http://www.une.edu.au/dreaming04/signup.html. We encourage you to sign up before the conference. On-line Sign-up will be available until June 22nd. Sign-up lists will also be available at the conference registration.

Reflection Groups

You are also invited to sign up for a Reflection Group. These provide an opportunity for small group discussion on the conference themes, concentrating on the input from the keynote speakers. They are offered at three times during the Conference.

Global Expo

The Global Expo (or Global Market) will be the evening highlight on Sunday. You are invited to display materials and posters from your Chaplaincy/Campus Ministry, and to share traditional food and drink from your home countries. Work with other Chaplains from your country on your presentation. Australia has some stringent import restrictions regarding fresh food. Check on Customs requirements before leaving home.

Prayer

There is time through the day for prayer. Some prayer has been timetabled. Christian denominational prayer coordinators would welcome assistance in preparing for prayer on July 2 and 4. Please contact them directly if you would like to help.

Excursions

Your registration confirmation included the Monday excursion. Some may not have received their first choice. It may be possible for you to arrange to exchange places with another delegate but the conference organizers are unable to facilitate this. Please observe departure times for your excursion.

Climate

In Brisbane in July, temperatures are usually in the range of 12-23 °C (53-74 degrees Fahrenheit). Days are often sunny and temperatures could be around 21°C in the middle of the day although it could be considerably cooler. For evenings, sweaters or jackets are usually needed. It will get dark early (around 5.30 pm). July is one of the driest months in Brisbane but a rain jacket is always advisable. For those travelling to other parts of Australia, please note that climatic conditions will different greatly throughout the country.

E-mail

Internet access will not be available to delegates through Griffith University computers. There are a number of coin operated internet machines at Westfield Garden City shopping centre. The centre is located within 5km (3 miles) of Griffith University's Nathan Campus. Alternatively, if you provide your own computer and you are staying on campus, you may be able to access the Internet from your room. Charges and conditions apply. Refer to http://www.une.edu.au/dreaming04/logistics.html#internet. All Robertson Gardens motel rooms and villas have modem telephone lines for internet access. Again, participants will need to provide their own computer and modem and charges will apply.

Entry into Australia

Overseas participants should check on visa requirements through the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs. An Electronic Travel Authority may be applicable see the Australian Government website: http://www.immi.gov.au/visit/index.htm

Insurance

Liability insurance is the responsibility of each individual delegate. Delegates should have their own travel insurance and medical coverage.

Banking

There is an Exchange Bureau at the airport arrival lounge.

There is an Automatic Teller Machine on campus at the Circuit, which should accept most cards. The Post-Office on campus accepts Australian access cards only. More Banks can be found at Shopping Centres at either Sunnybank (corner of Mains Rd & McCullough St) or at Garden City (corner of Logan Rd & Kessels Rd).

Laundry

Coin operated machines are available at the lower level of the Bellenden Ker Residence (where most participants will be accommodated).

Breakfast

Breakfast is included in registration costs for participants living on campus only.

Medical Services

University Medical Centre. Hours: 9am to 5pm Mon-Fri. Call 3875 7299.

QEII Hospital is located on Kessels Road directly opposite the main entrance to Griffith University. Open all hours. Call 3275 6111.

Garden City Medical Centre is located at Upper Mount Gravatt on the corner of Kessels and Logan Roads. Hours: 7.30-8pm Mon-Fri, 8am-6pm Sat, 9am-4pm Sun. Call 3349 6544.

Check telephone book for other doctors if required. There is no Chemist or Pharmacy on campus.

Parking

Parking is available on Campus at a charge of $5 per day. Please enquire at Accommodation registration, Campus Life Office, The Hub

Wake-up calls

Wake-up calls are not provided so a travelling alarm clock might be useful.

Commercial enterprises on campus

Post Office and Campus News, The Co-op Bookshop, STA Travel, Uni Hair Salon, The Hubbit Convenience Store, Uni Credit Union, Cafe Enternet, Campus Club, Computer Shop, National Australia Bank ATM.

Smoking

Nathan is a non-smoking campus. Smoking is prohibited in all buildings including the residences.
