Cassandra
Howes Cassandra Howes is a Methodist Minister who trained at an ecumenical theological college and was ordained in 1983.
Her first stationing was as ecumenical youth chaplain in a new town setting. She then entered Higher Eduation Chaplaincy and was a chaplain in three UK universities before becomimg Senior Chaplain at the University of the West of England in Bristol. As the Head of the Chaplaincy Service she is a senior manager in the University and is involved in strategic planning processes.
She writes: "I believe that it is possible for Chaplaincy to be well integrated into the life of the university whilst retaining a measure of 'apartness' and 'distinctivness'. I am concerned that Chaplains should be part of a professional body and should work to professional and acceptable agreed standards."
Cassandra is currently part of an ecunenical working group who are exploring the viability of creating a professional association to share good practice. She has always believed that Chaplaincy should be multifaith and inclusive. At Sheffield Hallam University she created and co-ordinated a multifaith Chaplaincy team. At UWE, she is attempting to develop an inclusive Chaplaincy, one that actively engages with the life of the university, its students and staff. She has been involved in interfaith work since her theological college days and co-founded the Sheffield Interfaith group. She is a member of the UK Methodist Connexional Committee for interfaith relations and Interfaith Advisor for the Churches in Bristol.
She is also the UK and Ireland member of the CEUC Board and a member of the Iona Community - an ecumenical community of women and men, lay and ordained.
