Wrong Course

Each year, one in three students changes their mind about studying. They generally decide that they:

  • are doing the wrong subjects
  • are in the wrong degree course
  • are at the wrong university. or
  • should not be at university at all.

This can be for a number of reasons such as:

  1. Your study units do not seem relevant to the type of job you want
Often it is difficult to make the connection between individual units of study and your long term career goal. A Careers Officer can discuss with you the types of transferable skills and qualities that you will develop within your units of study and how these relate to the workplace. Have you considered undertaking a Workready to clarify your career choices?
  2. You are not enjoying the units or course that you are studying
Getting a balance between what you like and what you are good at is a good way to make subject choices. Choosing subjects that you enjoy can add to the satisfaction of your studying.
  3. You are unhappy with your results
Perhaps the course you are doing is not the right one for you. There are always options. Talking to a Careers Officer will help you to identify a cluster of occupations that would suit your particular mix of interests and abilities. In addition there are a number of pathways available to achieve your career goals. Disappointing results are not the end of the world. There are still plenty of pathways open to get where you want to go.

Talk it over first

A number of support staff can help you work your way through these problems. They may be able to help you reorganise things so that you can continue with your current enrolment or advise you about the best way to change your enrolment. If you are an external student, you may also consider talking with a counsellor in your local area.
