Professional Development Workshop: Conversations about text: Grammar and teaching
Presenters: Joanne Rossbridge and Kathy Rushton
9.30 - 12.00 Room 224, Education Building E7

Familiarity with grammar is essential when using language for a range of purposes and audiences as this knowledge supports appropriate language choices. Grammatical knowledge therefore supports students to develop reading and writing in all curriculum areas. As a result of the NAPLAN, BST and ELLA tests many teachers have recognised the need to learn more about the grammatical features of texts.
In this workshop we will use a functional model of language to consider the grammatical features of a particular genre or text type – a persuasive text. Participants will have the opportunity to identify how the audience and purpose of a text is defined by the grammar. They will also be supported to analyse persuasive texts, identify grammatical features and become familiar with some strategies for teaching grammatical features in context.
