Helen Edwards 'Using metaphors with today's learners'
Thursday 14th September 12.30pm - 1pm, PDaL Seminar Room
Abtract: Early childhood students enter TAFE and university settings with a unique set of experiences and approaches to learning. To address these needs it is important to have an awareness of the factors that motivate them and how they prefer to learn. Their approaches to learning will influence their understanding of the materials presented and how concepts are explored. The aim of this paper is to examine the use of a range of metaphors to engage learners and help them to unlock the meanings of abstract concepts. The examples used will be drawn from practice-based research in early childhood settings. Our experiences in working with today's learners affirm the claims made by Amy Reichert (2004:174): 'We cannot tell our students how to write, but we can facilitate their own discovery … we can provide them with tools which they decide for themselves when and how to use.'
