Unit Description

Entomology introduces students to the behaviour, ecology, identity and physiology of insects. Students will be examining the fundamental roles that insects play in the natural, agricultural, urban and domestic environments. Student outcomes will include an appreciation for seeing insects as the major drivers of ecosystem function, and as fundamental drivers of biodiversity, as well as their role in forensic entomology, and biocontrol/quarantine. The major assessments will include a comprehensive insect collection, laboratory report, and literature review based on lecture material.

Students should note that this unit requires animal experimentation and/or dissection during some mandatory practical classes.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify the importance of insects within the environment;
  2. recognise the major orders and families;
  3. show a developed understanding of insect anatomy, physiology and morphology; and
  4. show improved skills in problem solving and asking questions within the context of entomology.

Graduate Attributes (GA)
Attribute Taught Assessed Practised
1 Knowledge of a Discipline
Entomology embeds itself within the wider Zoology discipline, and shows how insects interact and relate to other invertebrate and vertebrate organisms.
True True True
2 Communication Skills
Written communication skills are taught, practised and assessed in the assignment.
True True True
3 Global Perspectives
The information provided in this unit is applicable, not just here in Australia, but world-wide.
True
4 Information Literacy
Students will be assessed on their skills in obtaining appropriate information for the assignments, using books, journals and online sources.
True
5 Life-Long Learning
In this unit students will develop a range of life-long learning skills such as how to seek out new information and critically analysing such information. Learning to work both independently and cooperatively with others is an important skill to develop.Students' intellectual curiosity and creativity will be stimulated. An appreciation of insects and their role(s) within the environment will be fostered.
True
6 Problem Solving
During the practical sessions students will be instructed in, and practise, the obtaining of relevant skills in approaching problems/tasks, deciding what sort of information is needed, getting that information, and then applying it appropriately. Problem-solving skills will be assessed in the assignments.

7 Social Responsibility
This graduate attribute is not directly addressed in this unit; however an understanding of the important role(s) of insects in sustainable development is relevant to this attribute.

8 Team Work
Much of the practical work will be undertaken in association with other students so that this graduate attribute is practised during laboratory sessions.
