Students will require: a computer with fairly good broadband internet access; a webcam, or a digital video camera and a microphone with recording ability (many new computers have a built-in webcam and microphone and the software to use them); knowledge of how to record and submit video presentation files for assessment (for students who do not yet have this knowledge, there will be basic tuition provided in the teaching materials, and other help is available online); Microsoft Word or a similar word-processing package; a working knowledge of Skype; the ability to save a document as pdf; Microsoft PowerPoint (or another presentation package), and the ability to create a presentation at a basic level (some basic training in using PowerPoint will be provided where necessary).

Students who are experienced with digital technologies might also want to make use of: software to edit the video presentations; and a scanner.

This unit is designed for native speakers of English. Students who have English as a second language are welcome, but the unit is not intended to help with difficulties caused by unfamiliar accents.

Unit Description

This unit trains students in effective oral communication skills (in English) for public presentation in a variety of 'real world' environments and on line. It develops skills in speech writing and analysis, preformance, and the use of appropriate presentation technologies.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. speak with greater confidence in public, specifically in the workplace;
  2. write and deliver effective speech presentations on specific topics related to their area of study;
  3. utilise suitable technologies to enhance oral presentations face-to-face and online; and
