| Learning Outcomes (LO) |
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

recognise the different writing styles produced by European, North American and Australasian travellers in and about Latin America;

articulate the relationship between particular forms of writing and the social, historical and political milieu in which it appeared;
-
write analytical commentaries, participate in discussions and make oral presentations in Spanish on topics related to Latin American travel writing;
-
analyse different travellers' texts by applying current theories on travel writing and postcolonial criticism; and
-
discuss how the concepts of Latin American people, landscape and culture have evolved from European arrival in the Americas to present-day Latin America.

Knowledge of a Discipline
Students will be able to competently read, understand and discuss a wide range of texts written by European, North American and Australasian travellers in and about Latin America. The unit will also familiarise them with the major contemporary trends in the field of travel writing. This attribute will be formally assessed in all assessment tasks.
