Unit Description

The unit offers an introduction to the main aspects of modern Hispanic history, literature, art and culture in Spain and the Spanish-speaking world, with particular attention to Hispanic America. Students will study the origins and evolution of the Hispanic world and embark on an exploration that includes online access to literary, historical and anthropological readings; relevant videos and movies; music, dance, paintings, food recipes and humour.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an understanding of the origins and development of Hispanic civilisation both in the Iberian Peninsula and its later extension and further development in the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America and the United States;
  2. demonstrate familiarity with the main cultural expressions of this civilisation in art, literature, architecture, music, food and dance;
  3. apply theoretical concepts related to the study of cultural encounters, particularly those related to the idea of 'otherness' as a cultural construct with social/material implications; and
  4. critically and creatively engage with Hispanic culture and its varied expressions.
