Unit Description

The aim of this unit is to understand the ramifications of globalisation and economic and social development and their impact on social change in the developing nations with particular emphasis on Asia. The focus will be on the nature and dynamics of managing development and the broad areas to be covered include: theories of development; the role of the state in development; institutions and processes in development; and governance issues in development such as policy making and planning, program implementation, decentralisation, participation, empowerment. Some key development sectors such as rural development, environmental management and health and population planning will also be evaluated.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an advanced knowledge about the context in which development policies are conceived, formulated, adopted and implemented;
  2. evaluate the role and functions of governmental and non-governmental institutions in development;
  3. analyse some of the most vital processes in achieving developmental goals; and
  4. explore several key sectors in development management.

The unit covers a wide area in understanding the various dimensions of the theory and practice of globalisation, development policy and management. The unit deals with the developing countries and in the context of global changes. It also emphasises the comparative method according to which similarities and differences among developing countries can be appreciated. This is an assessable component of the assessment tasks. 		True True True

Students are encouraged to develop research skills in collecting and evaluating data, including the skills to assess the utility of information, identify the most useful sources of information and critically examine those sources. This aspect is assessed in the assessment tasks. 		True True True

The unit introduces concepts and approaches which build upon students' prior knowledge and emphasises skills in research, analysis, interpretation and exposition which will be usable in any area of future learning and are assessed in the assessment tasks. 		True True True
