Unit Description

The aim of this unit is to understand the ramifications of globalisation and economic and social development and their impact on social change in the developing nations with particular emphasis on Asia. The focus will be on the nature and dynamics of managing development and the broad areas to be covered include: theories of development; the role of the state in development; institutions and processes in development; and governance issues in development such as policy making and planning, program implementation, decentralisation, participation, empowerment. Some key development sectors such as rural development, environmental management and health and population planning will also be evaluated.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand the principal concepts/theories in development, globalisation and social change;
  2. explore the context in which development policies are conceived, formulated, adopted and implemented;
  3. evaluate the nature of development regimes and processes in developing countries;
  4. examine the roles of various stakeholders in managing development;
  5. analyse the relevance of globalisation to development and social change; and
  6. organise and articulate ideas for a range of audiences and purposes by communicating effectively in written and oral presentations.
