Unit Description

This unit examines the structures and processes of everyday life, stressing foundational issues in sociology, and introducing contemporary approaches to sociological research. The content of the unit may vary from year to year, but ranges from topics concerning embodiment, queuing behaviour, and ordinary conversation to issues in popular culture, the family and the play of games.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. see, describe and analyse the lived-work of the social order;
  2. describe and analyse the relationship between this lived-work and sociological inquiry in concrete settings;
  3. distinguish between sociologies of the witnessable social order and sociologies of the hidden order;
  4. engage in exploratory work.
