Unit Description

This unit deals with basic statistical models and methods used in analysis of business and economic data. Topics include two-sample tests, chi-square and other non-parametric tests, mutliple regression, elementary time series analysis, index numbers and simulation. Computer analysis using EXCEL is a basic part of the unit.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. test hypotheses concerning differences between two or more population parameters (e.g., means, proportions);
  2. understand and use chi-square and other non-parametric test procedures;
  3. understand and estimate multiple regression models; interpret and test hypotheses concerning the parameters of a multiple regression model and its use for prediction;
  4. understand and use different time-series forecasting models (moving averages, exponential smoothing, autoregressive, linear trend and quadratic trend model) to forecast a time series;
  5. compute and interpret index numbers for measuring changes in prices over time or space; and
  6. use excel to conduct data analysis.
