Unit Description

This unit commences with the basis of endocrinology as a scientific discipline and covers the pirnciples of hormone action, receptors, growth factors and assessment of hormone activity. The main endocrine organs are looked at in some detail. Reproductive physiology is discussed with a strong comparative basis within mammals. Disease, which occurs as the result of disruptions or lesions to the endocrine system, will be discussed briefly when relevant to the topic area. The laboratory practial work covers the following areas, basic histology of endocrine glands and reproductive organs, and the assay of hormones. You will also be expected to conduct a literature research project into a relevant topic of your choice.

PSIO531 is based on the undergraduate unit with additional assessment as postgraduate students will be expected to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an understanding of reproductive physiology and endocrinology;
  2. analyse samples using appropriate physiological experimental techniques appropriately;
  3. conduct statistical analyses and understand and report on biological data;
  4. synthesise and communicate knowledge effectively; and
  5. discuss reproductive physiology and endocrinology in a range of mammalian species and be able to read, understand and present information from primary literature on this subject.
