Unit Description

This unit provides a thorough introduction to pharmacology by 1) describing how drugs can enter, be distributed in and be removed from the body; and 2) what drugs do with emphasis on drug mechanisms at the cellular and molecular level. The unit consists of modules covering the basic principles of pharmacology, pharmacology of the autonomic nervous system, cardiovascular system and inflammatory mediators.

Materials Text information will be published prior to commencement of the teaching period.
Disclaimer Unit information may be subject to change prior to commencement of the teaching period.
Assessment Assessment information will be published prior to commencement of the teaching period.
Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate a thorough understanding of the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics;
  2. demonstrate a thorough understanding of the mode of action of drugs which affect the autonomic nervous system, cardiovascular system and the inflammatory response;
  3. interpret and generate reports which incorporate analyses of pharmacological data; and
  4. synthesise and communicate knowledge effectively.

Graduate Attributes (GA)
Attribute Taught Assessed Practised
1 Knowledge of a Discipline
Students will demonstrate a command of a detailed body of pharmacological knowledge. Discipline knowledge will be provided online. Lectures, practical classes and workshops will provide students with practical applications of such knowledge. Assessment of discipline knowledge and practical application will be made by an end of semester examination, an essay, practical and workshop reports.

2 Communication Skills
Students will practise communication skills regularly throughout the semester with compulsory practical report write ups and an essay. Emphasis will be placed on clear writing and utilisation of appropriate electronic communication. Instructions on developing and improving communication skills will be provided in unit information documents and through academic feedback.

4 Information Literacy
With respect to the knowledge students acquire in this Unit, students will: 1) locate information effectively and efficiently; 2) critically evaluate information and the search process used to obtain the information; and 3) use information to construct new concepts and create new understandings. Development of these attributes will be practised in lectures and practical classes and workshops, and will be assessed in the essay and practical class and workshop write ups.

5 Life-Long Learning
With respect to the knowledge students learn in this unit, students will: 1) reflect on limitations of current knowledge; 2) identify, evaluate and implement personal learning strategies for lifelong personal and professional development; 3) practise intellectual curiosity, creativity and critical thinking; 4) learn both independently and cooperatively; and 5) learn new skills and apply learning to new and unexpected situations. Students will develop each of the above attributes through exposure to the lecture and practical class activities.

6 Problem Solving
With respect to the knowledge students acquire in this unit, students will: 1) apply logical, critical and creative thinking to a range of problems; 2) identify critical issues in the discipline; and 3) collect, collate and analyse relevant information to assist problem solving. Development of these attributes will be incorporated in lectures and practical classes, and will be practised and assessed in essay, practical class write ups and end of semester exam.
