Unit Description

This unit examines contemporary global issues and how they create or detract from peace. After a brief examination of the multiple and inter-related aspects of peace, we look at various interpretations of globalisation. We then explore food security and hunger issues, looking at their underlying socio-economic causes. We consider the benefits, problems of and possible changes to global economic systems. We examine the consequences of militarism, and possible alternatives such as interventions and peace activism. We cover global warming and environmental advocacy, and how global communications and technology advances may help or hinder this advocacy. The unit concludes by discussing cultural resistance to unwelcome aspects of globalisation.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. define globalisation and identify the changes that have occurred through the process of globalisation;
  2. analyse the effects of these changes on the social infrastructure of Australia's neighbours and other nations around the world;
  3. demonstrate a better understanding of the processes of sustainability, global justice and equity;
  4. demonstrate a high level of understanding of the dynamics of inter-ethnic conflict, violence and struggles that occur within and between states; and
  5. apply the knowledge gained to strengthen their understanding of global social, military and economic systems, and movements of resistance.

Students will practise communication skills through written feedback on the assignments and participation component of the unit. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. Students will practise their communication skills through their online discussions and completing the assessment tasks.

Students will be taught how reconciliation and restorative justice is promoted in deeply divided societies. They will analyse and evaluate reconciliation and justice processes in different areas of the world and will be expected to write an applied analysis of the processes undergone in one specific country.

Students will be directed to relevant literature and taught how to assess its validity. Students will be assessed on their ability to identify and critically analyse the relevant literature.

By completing the assessments, students will be provided with the necessary lifelong skills to be able to research, write and discuss social issues. These skills can be transferred to any discipline, and will be useful in any research positions. These attributes will be assessed in all of the assessments.

Students will be assessed on their ability to conceptualise problems and formulate a range of solution sin both research and presentation. They will be required to collect, collate and analyse relevant information to assist problem solving.

Students will be taught about their professional responsibilities as a researcher to provide balanced and accurate research. In addition, students will be taught that they have a social responsibility to question and challenge some 'facts' and understanding the importance of understanding the dynamics of conflict. This will be assessed and taught through their responses to the essays. In addition, students acknowledge the social and ethical implications of their actions.

Students will practice working collaboratively and network effectively to solve problems on the online discussion board taking initiative and leading others in this environment. They will also negotiate and assert their own values and respect the values and contributions of others on the discussion board and in their own essays.
