Unit Description

This unit critically explores processes of reconciliation and justice associated with post-conflict situations. It examines legal and political mechanisms established to call to account the perpetrators of atrocities and human rights violations committed during conflict. It evaluates the role that war crimes tribunals, truth commissions and informal justice mechanisms play in the transition from conflict to peace. Case studies from South Africa, Rwanda, Timor Leste and Yugoslavia are included. It also examines processes of reconciliation amongst deeply divided societies. It evaluates the effectiveness of reconciliation mechanisms in situations such as Australia, Mozambique, the Solomon Islands and Northern Ireland.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. evaluate judicial, democratic, traditional and other mechanisms which address atrocities and human rights violations committed during conflicts;
  2. understand and define the various processes and practices involved in coping with the psychosocial trauma endured by communities in conflict;
  3. analyse and critically evaluate the effectiveness of current attempts at reconciliation in deeply divided societies;
  4. complete an applied analysis of the effectiveness of post conflict truth, justice and reconciliation processes;
  5. competently complete a gender analysis of a reconciliation process; and
  6. evaluate and critically analyse the competing priorities for the various stakeholders in a post-conflict situation.

Students will deepen their knowledge of the peace studies discipline, specific to this unit, is taught on an external basis by using the online facility where essential materials are accessed. The unit is assessed through two written assignments and online participation. 		True True

This unit covers the specific area of post-conflict truth and justice processes. Students will be taught communication skills through written feedback on the assignments and online participation component of the unit. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. 		True True True

Students will examine how reconciliation and restorative justice is promoted in deeply divided societies. They will analyse and evaluate reconciliation and justice processes in different areas of the world and will be expected to write an applied analysis of the processes developed in a selected country. Students will be assisted in their search for relevant literature and educated as to how to assess its validity and value. Students will be assessed on their ability to identify and critically analyse the relevant literature from a wide range of sources including grey literature. 		True True

Students will be provided with necessary skills of life-long utility to be able to research, write on and discuss social issues. These attributes will be assessed in all of the assessments. 		True True
6 Problem Solving
Students will be assessed on their ability to conceptualise problems and formulate a range of solutions to both research and presentation. Students will be required to discuss issues of post-conflict justice and the need to balance justice and truth against the pragmatic requirement for a workable peace settlement requires the demonstration of significant problem solving skills. 7 Social Responsibility
This unit will make students aware of the need for reconciliation and justice and demonstrate various ways in which these goals have been achieved. 		True

Students will practise working collaboratively and network effectively to solve problems on the online discussion board taking initiative and leading others in this environment. They will also negotiate and assert their own values and respect the values and contributions of others on the discussion board and in their own essays. 		True
