Unit Description

Students will undertake applied social analysis in relation to transforming environmental and or natural resource conflicts. Topics covered include, ecological violence, ecological sustainability, community sustainability, resilience, conflict transformation and environmental peacemaking. The focus of the unit is a safe and secure environment for the future. A constructivist case study approach to learning enables students to select conflicts, identify environmental and social impacts. The actors involved, define their roles, describe the dynamics of the conflicts and develop appropriate solutions to assist in transforming the conflicts they have chosen.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. undertake applied social analysis of a community experiencing rapid change and conflict due to the impacts of unsustainable development practices that are resulting in environmental and social impacts;
  2. understand the scope of the social changes communities affected by environmental and or natural resource conflicts may experience;
  3. critically evaluate how poorly planned and implemented projects disrupt ecological sustainability, community sustainability, livelihoods, development aspirations and land or natural resource use patterns;
  4. develop appropriate solutions that will assist in transforming environmental and or natural resource conflicts;
  5. develop appropriate strategies to assist in transforming ecological violence; and
  6. design development projects that have sustainable social and environmental impacts.

Students will practise communication skills through the assessment tasks and participation component of the unit. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. Students will practise their communication skills through completing the assessment tasks and online discussion participation.

Students will learn about changing social and environmental conditions in local communities and around the world by using case studies and what impact this has on Australia.

Students will be directed to relevant literature and taught how to assess its validity. Students will be assessed on their ability to identify and critically analyse the relevant literature.

By completing the assessments, students will be provided with the necessary life-long skills to be able to research, write and discuss social issues. In addition, students will be taught that they have a social responsibility to question and challenge some 'facts'. This will be assessed and taught through their responses to the online assessments and online postings.

Students will practise working collaboratively and network effectively to solve problems on the online discussion board taking initiative and leading others in this environment.
