Unit Description

This unit examines contemporary global issues from a social science perspective focusing on the context of globalisation and its influences on society. It relates global issues to the multiplicity of armed conflicts that occur inside and between states including among Australia's neighbours in the Asia Pacific region. We look at how to improve international and local peace and security. The unit also examines common assumptions about globalisation and 'anti-globalisation' activists; socio-economic impacts of globalised 'free trade'; who benefits, who pays? It examines how globalisation impacts on culture and on the environment. How are global environmental issues such as climate change dealt with by states, organisations and individuals?

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. define globalisation and identify the changes that have occurred through the process of globalisation;
  2. analyse the effects of these changes on the social infrastructure of Australia's neighbours and other nations around the world; and
  3. demonstrate a better understanding of the processes of sustainability, global justice and equity.

1 Knowledge of a Discipline
Students will deepen their knowledge of the peace studies discipline, obtaining global perspectives specific to this unit, taught on an external basis by using the online facility where essential materials are assessed. The unit is assessed through two written assignments and online participation. 		True True True
2 Communication Skills
Students will be taught communication skills through written feedback on the assignments and participation component of the unit. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. Students will practise their communication skills through their online discussions and completing the assessment tasks. 		True True True
3 Global Perspectives
Students will be taught varying definitions of and perspectives on globalisation. They will analyse and evaluate globalisation processes in different areas of the world and will be expected to write an applied analysis of the impacts of globalisation. 		True True
4 Information Literacy
Students will be directed to relevant literature and taught how to assess its validity. Students will be assessed on their ability to identify and critically analyse the relevant literature. 		True True
5 Life-Long Learning
By completing the assessments, students will be provided with the necessary lifelong skills to be able to research, write and discuss social issues. These skills can be transferred to any discipline, and will be useful in any research positions. These attributes will be assessed in all of the assessments. 		True True
6 Problem Solving
Students will be assessed on their ability to conceptalise problems and formulate a range of solutions in both research and presentation. They will be required to collect, collate and analyse relevant information to assist problem solving. 		True
7 Social Responsibility
Students will be taught about their professional responsibilities as a researcher to provide balanced and accurate research. In addition, students will be taught that they have a social responsibility to question and challenge some 'facts' and understanding the importance of understanding the dynamics of conflict. This will be assessed and taught through their responses to the essays. In addition, students acknowledge the social and ethical implications of their actions. 		True True True
8 Team Work
Students will practise their teamwork skills through participating in online discussion postings and exploring hour conflict is managed and the peace building process. They will be required to discuss the weekly topics with their fellow students in a thoughtful and respectful manner. 		True True
