Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

exhibit an advanced level of understanding of the relationship between media, politics and society in the context of rapid change in Australia and other societies;

discuss and critically analyze the social and political significance of mass media in Australia and other societies;

discuss the major themes in the analysis and understanding of the relationship between mass media, politics and society within contemporary processes of change;

research the relationship between media, politics and society according to their own specific interests and disciplinary backgrounds; and
-
demonstrate an enhanced capacity to research topics and produce focused, well-structured essays that deal with issues associated with media, politics and society in Australia and elsewhere.

Knowledge of a Discipline
Knowledge of the political and international studies discipline will be taught by using the unit guide, which provides essential material for successful completion of the unit. It will be assessed through two written essays.

Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. Students will practise their communication skills through completing the assessment tasks.

Students will demonstrate an awareness of the global context of the subject area and they will develop an awareness of the need for tolerance and inter-cultural understanding.

Students are encouraged to develop research skills in collecting and evaluating data, including the skills to assess the utility of information, identify the most useful sources of information and critically analyse and examine those sources.

In addition, students will be taught that they have a social responsibility to question and challenge some 'facts'. This will be assessed and taught through their responses to the assignment questions and discussions in online postings.

Students will practise working collaboratively and network effectively to solve problems on the online discussion board taking initiative and leading others in this environment.
