Unit Description

This unit explores the interconnections between family forms, marriage arrangements, post-marital residence patterns, domestic and paid labour, and the roles and status of women, in various Asian societies. It also examines how state policies in areas such as paid employment, population and education impact on women and the family.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. exhibit an understanding of and be able to critique the major theoretical perspectives employed in the study of women and the family;
  2. show an indepth understanding of the status and roles of women, and variations in family units, in a range of Asian societies;
  3. critically analyse the relationship between family arrangements, domestic and paid labour and the roles and status of women in Asian societies; and
  4. critically analyse the impact on state policies on women in Asia.

In the topic notes, guided readings and online discussion students will be taught problem-solving skills. Students will be assessed on their ability to conceptualise the essay and online questions, and to formulate appropriate responses. They will be required to collect, collate and analyse relevant information, and to integrate theory and empirical data, to assist problem solving.

Students will be taught about their professional responsibilities as a researcher to provide balanced and accurate research. In addition, students will be taught that they have a social responsibility to question and challenge some 'facts'. This will be assessed and taught through their responses to the assignment tasks and discussions in online postings.

Students will practise working collaboratively and networking effectively to solve problems in the online discussion forums, taking initiatives and leading others in this environment.
