Unit Description

The unit is a study of the politics of international human rights. It focuses on the variations in interpretation of the international human rights regime and the emphases on differing sets of rights. This will include the debates on universalism versus relativism, the relationship between human rights and 'democracy', the political economy of rights promotion and abuse, and the role of human rights in the political relations among states.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. exhibit an understanding of the range of contemporary international approaches to human rights;
  2. understand debates between relativistic and universalistic approaches to human rights;
  3. assess the significance of human rights issues in relations among states;
  4. identify major aspects of global political economy affecting international human rights; and
  5. enhance analytical and writing skills and foster conceptual abilities at a level appropriate to postgraduate study.
