Unit Description

This unit examines Australia's changing relations with Asia, particularly in the post-World War II period. It focuses on the traditional images of Asia and Asians held by Australians, political and politico-economic relations, and Asian immigration to Australia.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. exhibit an awareness of the historical dimensions of Australia-Asia relations;
  2. examine in depth Australia's changing political, strategic and economic relations with the Asian region, and with particular Asian countries;
  3. use higher-level skills in applying a range of social science concepts and perspectives to the analysis of specific aspects of Australia-Asia relations;
  4. analyse and write at a level appropriate to postgraduate students;
  5. discuss the opportunities for positive interaction with Asia and Asians, and how such opportunities have been inhibited by such factors as strategic concerns, internal political considerations, ethnocentrism,stereotypical images, and racist sentiment;
  6. critically discuss Australian policies on Asian immigration, and of the experiences and problems of Asian immigrants in Australia.
