Unit Description

This unit examines major processes of transformation of contemporary international relations and world politics. It focuses on events and trends since the end of the Cold War and the dramatic shifts in the emerging framework of 21st century world politics. It introduces principal international relations theories which seek to interpret contemporary world order.
Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify key trends in contemporary international relations;
  2. understand and use important concepts such as the state and sovereignty;
  3. assess the nature and significance of globalisation in theory and practice;
  4. compare principal theoretical perspectives in the discipline and assess the role of theory in studying international relations;
  5. demonstrate political and normative implications of international relations theories and practice; and
  6. exhibit higher-level academic skills of the social sciences through theoretically-informed analyses of contemporary international relations.

Through completing the assessments, students will be provided with the necessary lifelong skills to be able to research, write on and discuss social issues. These skills can be transferred to any discipline, and will be useful in any research positions. These attributes will be assessed in all of the assessments (written skills; analytical skills). Students will be assessed on their ability to conceptualise the essay questions and formulate a range of solutions in both research and presentation. They will be required to collect, collate and analyse relevant information to assist problem solving. 		True True
7 Social Responsibility
Students will be taught about their professional responsibilities as a researcher to provide balanced and accurate research. In addition, students will be taught that they have a social responsibility to question and challenge some 'facts'. This will be assessed and taught through their responses to the assignment questions and discussions in online postings. 		True True True

Students will practise working collaboratively and network effectively to solve problems on the online discussion board, taking initiatives and leading others in this environment. They will also negotiate and assert their own values and respect the values and contributions of others on the discussion board. 		True
