Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

exhibit an understanding of the relationship between media, politics and society in the context of rapid change in Australia and other societies;

discuss the social and political significance of mass media in Australia and other societies;

discuss the major themes in the analysis and understanding of the relationship between mass media, politics and society within contemporary processes of change;

research the relationship between media, politics and society according to their own specific interests and disciplinary backgrounds; and
-
show an enhanced capacity to research topics and produce focused, well-structured essays that deal with issues associated with media, politics and society in Australia and elsewhere.

Knowledge of a Discipline
Knowledge of the political and international discipline will be taught by using the unit guide, which provides essential material in order to successfully complete the unit. The unit is assessed through two written assignments.

Communication Skills
Students will be taught communication skills through written feedback on the written components of the unit. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. Students will practise their communication skills through completing the assessment tasks.

Students will demonstrate an awareness of the global context of the subject area and they will develop an awareness of the need for tolerance and inter-cultural understanding.

Students will be directed to relevant literature and taught how to assess its validity. Students will be assessed on their ability to identify and critically analyse the relevant literature.
