Unit Description

This unit examines Australia's changing relations with Asia in the post-World War II period, in particular 'engagement' with Asia since the 1980s. It focuses on the traditional images of Asia and Asians held by Australians, political and economic relations, aid, and Asian immigration to Australia.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand in a basic way the historical dimensions of Australia-Asia relations;
  2. understand Australia's changing political, strategic and economic relations with the Asian region, and with particular Asian countries;
  3. apply a range of social science concepts and perspectives to the analysis of Australia-Asia relations;
  4. appreciate opportunities for positive interaction with Asia and Asians, and how such opportunities have been inhibited by such factors as strategic concerns, internal political considerations, ethnocentrism, stereotypical images, and racist sentiment; and
  5. comprehend in a basic fashion Australian policies on Asian immigration, and the experiences and problems of Asian immigrants in Australia.

In the topic notes, guided readings and online discussion students will be taught problem-solving skills. Students will be assessed on their ability to conceptualise the essay and online questions, and to formulate appropriate responses. They will be required to collect, collate and analyse relevant information, and to integrate theory and empirical data, to assist problem solving.

7 Social Responsibility
Students will be taught about their professional responsibilities as a researcher to provide balanced and accurate research. In addition, students will be taught that they have a social responsibility to question and challenge some 'facts'. This will be assessed and taught through their responses to the assignment tasks and discussions in online postings.

Students will practise working collaboratively and networking effectively to solve problems in the online discussion forums, taking initiatives and leading others in this environment. They will also negotiate and assert their own values and respect the values and contributions of others on the discussion forums.
