Unit Description

This unit introduces students to a range of topics in Asian societies such as family, women, classical states, imperialism, nationalism and nation-building. In doing so it focusses on the themes of power and conflict. Through an examination of these topics students are encouraged to develop a critical attitude toward ethnocentric and orientalist views of Asia.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. think critically about the 'idea' of Asia moving beyond 'common sense' and 'stereoptypical' understandings;
  2. understand how ethnocentrism and racism affect our perceptions of Asia and its peoples;
  3. explain how power and conflict have been instrumental in the emergence of modern Asia;
  4. apply concepts and perspectives to the analysis of specific topics; and
  5. appreciate the cultural and social diversity of Asia.

Students will be taught communication skills through written feedback on the written, online and participation component of the unit. Students will learn valuable communication skills through participation in tutorials and online discussions. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. Students will practise their communication skills through completing the assessment tasks and online participation.

Students will be assessed on their ability to deconstruct the essay question and to integrate theory and literature into their answer. Students will need to work out how to address the question and where the most appropriate material is to answer the question.
