Unit Description

The unit provides an integrated treatment of policy issues relevant to the development, conservation, management and administration of natural resources in Australia, including soil, water, minerals and biological resources. Particular attention is given to the social, legal, constitutional and political constraints including community involvement, which affect ecologically sustainable development and biological conservation. Personal and group communication skills are a component of this unit. Students should have up-to-date Internet access. The 500 level unit is based on the undergraduate level unit with additional reading, assignments or projects and the demonstration of a greater level of understanding of the undergraduate material.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand what public policy is, how policy is created, how power is exercised in the policy process and how this is relevant to you as a natural resource manager and to natural resource management outcomes;
  2. understand how stakeholder and community values can influence the world views and claims-making that occurs within the decision making process of policy formulation;
  3. understand how natural resource policy may impact upon various stakeholder groups and sectors of the community;
  4. have knowledge of the range of policy mechanisms which are available to government to implement policy, and be able to make judgements as to where particular policy mechanisms might be most appropriate.
