Unit Description

This unit consists of guided research in the theoretical and/or practical study of several discipline areas. It is specifically directed to an integrated research project containing major and minor components drawn from the sub-disciplines of either composition, or ethnomusicology, or musicology or performance or a broader combination in the case of community music. It is expected that candidates will gain high quality insight into their field of study.

EITHER a combination of major (66%) and minor (34%) components as follows: ethnomusicology and musicology - (major 10,000 words; minor 5000 words); composition (major 30 minutes; minor 15 minutes); OR community music: a complete performance program (66%) and a 5000 word report (34%) on the nature of the work undertaken

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. formulate questions pertaining to either ethnomusicology or musicology or composition or performance or music in the community;
  2. apply higher-order, independent research skills to research tasks in one or more of these areas;
  3. use analytical skills, in combining a broad range of research materials, often from several media;
  4. either write up extended research, based on independent enquiry; or compose a series of works based upon an understanding of compositional principles; or present performance(s) which demonstrate research into performance practice; or develop and execute a program of composition and performance in a specific locale and write up the outcomes of that program; and
  5. demonstrate an understanding of methodological issues and a broad knowledge of the overall subject area relating to either ethnomusicology or musicology or composition or performance or combined areas.
