Unit Description

This unit consists of guided research in ethnomusicology or musicology, or in the study of compositional principles and techniques. It is specifically directed to the writing of a thesis in either ethnomusicology or musicology or a portfolio of compositions, with the expectation that candidates will gain high quality insight into their field of study.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. formulate questions relevant to research or creative music making as related to either ethnomusicology or musicology or composition;
  2. apply skills of higher order, independent research and/or creative practice;
  3. apply advanced analytical abilities in combining a broad range of research materials, often from several media;
  4. either write up extended research and analysis in ethnomusicology or musicology, or compose a series of works informed by an understanding of compositional principles and techniques; and
  5. demonstrate an understanding of the methodological issues and a broad knowledge of the overall subject area relating to either ethnomusicology or musicology or composition.
