Unit Description

This course work unit consists of four integrated assignments which can be completed in either ethnomusicology or musicology or composition. The four assignments will provide the platform for the Dissertation unit (either MUSI402H or MUSI403H) and will ensure candidates gain experience in theoretical, practical, bibliographical and analytical facets of scholarship.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an understanding of methodological approaches, fundamental tenets and issues pertaining to the sub-disciplines of either ethnomusicology or musicology or composition or performance;
  2. critically evaluate literature specific to the field of study;
  3. competently analyse a musical performance, either through participation or observation, in order to understand music as a social and cultural phenomenon; and
  4. apply advanced analytical skills towards the consideration and description of a musical work relevant to the individual's area of study.
