Unit Description

This is a thematic unit focused on song style and structure across both time and place. It examines various song genres from German Lieder to song cycles and pop songs. The unit considers a variety of issues including vocal technique, text-tune relationships, song accompaniment, song writing, and song as poetry.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify song genres across time and place;
  2. identify and demonstrate an understanding of the interweaving musical parameters (melody, rhythm, harmony, form and texture), that constitute the song; and
  3. identify relationships between the words, vocal part and accompaniment of a song.
