Unit Description

This unit focuses on practical applications of technology in music, primarily in instrument design and technology and its subsequent impact on composers and performers. Students will design and create their own instruments, suitable for use in the classroom environment, and learn practical arrangement techniques for classroom ensemble. There is also a focus on computers and loop-based composition, with consideration given to aspects and influence of non-Western music present in this genre.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. compose and arrange music that is purpose-specific, eg to suit a pre-determined level of competence in instrumental technique;
  2. adapt music notation principles to suit non-standard instruments, including computer generated;
  3. compose music using computer software;
  4. demonstrate an understanding of instrument mechanics and technological developments, and how this impacts on composition; and
  5. appreciate technical considerations for a wide variety of standard and non-standard musical instruments.
