Unit Description

This unit focuses on post-tonal music from the 20th and 21st centuries, through studies in practical music composition as well as analytical method. Also, students will be introduced to practices used in writing imitative counterpoint, from both tonal and non-tonal perspectives.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. analyse music (tonal and post-tonal) using appropriate method(s);
  2. compose music using a variety of instrumentation and method, both tonal and post-tonal;
  3. competently write about music, using appropriate terminology, method and analytical processes; and
  4. compose and analyse music using imitative contrapuntal structures.
