Unit Description

This unit focuses on three primary areas: composition, orchestration and advanced harmony. There is a strong focus on Australian music of the last 25 years.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. recognise and apply advanced techniques and processes of Western harmonic theory;
  2. orchestrate appropriately for a prescribed instrumentation, with consideration given to Western and historical performance practice(s);
  3. compose using a variety of techniques and instrumentation, with respect given to considerations, in this case advanced tonal concepts and techniques/foci employed by Australian composers in recent years; and
  4. fluently communicate using music notation concepts and practices.
