Unit Description

This unit is focused on historically and culturally informed performance practice in music. Students will develop skills and concepts related to the performance of repertoire from historically or culturally 'distant' traditions. They will focus on performance practice methodologies and research as it relates to Western music in both the Classical and popular/contemporary music traditions. Students will also practise aural skills as related to notation practice and transcription. All students will also undertake ensemble performance activities.

Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.
Disclaimer Unit information may be subject to change prior to commencement of the teaching period.
Assessment Assessment information will be published prior to commencement of the teaching period.
Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. make informed decisions about the interpretation of music from periods or cultures that are 'distant' from their own;
  2. perform a short program at an appropriately high standard on their principal instrument/voice;
  3. identify key concepts and practices in the 'early music movement';
  4. transcribe in notated form various melodies and rhythms as played by the lecturer;
  5. perform a piece in a group situation; and
  6. perform repertoire with an ensemble relevant to their musical background and residential location.

6 Problem Solving
The exploration of repertoire on students' principal instruments as well as the development of interpretation skills will be used throughout their careers. Learning new repertoire on their principal instruments/voice and in their ensembles clearly involves skills of problem solving. In-class critiques by lecturers and tutors will develop these problem-solving strategies, which will be formally assessed in the solo performance and the short essay.

8 Team Work
