Unit Description

This unit is focused on the relationship between improvisation and musical performance. Students will develop skills of performance with an emphasis on understanding the practice of improvisation in western and non-western contexts. Students will also practise conducting skills as related to instrumental ensembles. All students will also undertake ensemble performance activities.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. improvise at a rudimentary standard;
  2. perform a short program of written or improvised works at an appropriately high standard on their principal instrument/voice;
  3. identify improvisation practices in a variety of musical traditions;
  4. direct an instrumental ensemble; and
  5. perform repertoire with an ensemble relevant to their musical background and residential location.
