Unit Description

This unit provides a broad introduction to musical concepts and processes and their socio-cultural origins in Asian history, followed by a detailed case study of one or more of the following nations' or regions' representative music traditions: Southeast Asia, the Middle East, East Asia, Japan, Indonesia or India.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify the major general social and religious concepts and practices of Asian musical traditions;
  2. identify the major technical musical concepts and practices of Asian musical traditions;
  3. describe the major musical parameters of one or more specific Asian traditions.
