Unit Description

This unit aims to further develop aural skills, previously embedded in the introductory units, within a discrete advanced-level unit, with a particular focus on melodic dictation and sight singing. It will also cover other musicianship skills such as score reading.This unit encourages students to develop active listening skills, and be able to move between aural recognition and description to musical notation with ease.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. recognise and notate at an advanced level melodic and harmonic progressions from Western Classical, popular and non-Western traditions;
  2. sing from notation melodic exercises with diatonic, modal and chromatic content; and
  3. realise at the keyboard figured bass notation and add harmony to a given melody.
