Unit Description

This unit focuses on core introductory level performance skills as may be required by all music students. Students will explore rehearsal techniques and methodological approaches specific to their principal instrument/voice, and will develop these towards an end-of-trimester performance. Students will also practise conducting skills as related to choral ensembles and develop knowledge of choral repertoire outside the Western Art Music tradition. All students will also undertake ensemble performance activities.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify and understand the aims and designs of the primary methodological approaches used in the performance of his/her principal instrument/voice;
  2. perform a short program at an appropriate introductory level on his/her principal instrument/voice;
  3. conduct and lead a rehearsal of a choral ensemble at a rudimentary standard;
  4. identify a wide variety of choral repertoire outside the Western Classical tradition that is appropriate for school ensembles; and
  5. perform repertoire with an ensemble relevant to his/her musical background and residential location.
