Unit Description

This unit is designed to expose students to factors affecting health equity, including access to care, through a structured clinical experience and associated learning activities. The unit also provides an opportunity for students to plan, conduct and report on a community field project.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify and critique research literature relevant the area of health equity being studied;
  2. perform a range of clinical skills relevant to the area of health equity being studied;
  3. demonstrate an appreciation and understanding of known demographic, educational and cultural factors affecting the physical and psychological wellbeing of patients, their families and the population;
  4. demonstrate an appreciation and understanding of interaction between humans and their social and physical environment, and ways in which these factors may impact on a person's clinical presentation, access to health care and ability to comply with a management plan;
  5. demonstrate an appreciation and understanding of the effect of resource maldistribution in the delivery of health to a population, and how this may impact on prevention, risk factor management, diagnosis and management plans for an individual in this population;
  6. demonstrate an appreciation and understanding of a capacity for appropriate inter-professional communication and behaviour with colleagues; and
  7. demonstrate an appreciation and understanding of respect for community values including an appreciation of diverse human backgrounds and cultural values.
